BUNDT CAKES

Born and raised in Augusta, GA, Bundt Cakes’ interest and passion in music was fostered from a young age. He was forced to take violin lessons from the ages of 3-16, cultivating a foundation in classical music and an interest in music theory. In an 8th grade music class, he picked up a guitar for the first time, realising that the malleability of the guitar was much more interesting to him than the violin. Some of his favorite songs to play when first learing guitar were Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash and The Distance by Cake. Growing up he was exposed to a variety of 90s rock music, laying down a foundation for his intricate guitar work and songwriting tendencies.

Whilst a Junior in high school, Bundt Cakes bonded with former soccer mate and old friend Connor Ewart over their love for depressive angsty music, and inadvertently started the group ‘undecided’/Gray Skills. Bringing in Grace Forgay and Preston Taylor, the band began playing shows at school events and even made an appearance at the local YMCA, experiences that grew him as a guitar player and helped bring him out of his shell as a performer and songwriter.

Bundt Cakes’ background in songwriting began when he took a composition and songwriting class under the ineffable Dr. Brad Green. His earliest songs were released under the moniker “DanTheMan13” on Soundcloud, songs that in his words are “pretty cringe.” The stand out single ‘Dear Saint Peter’ shows just how strong of a songwriter Bundt Cakes is and his keen production sensibilities, though having absolutely zero knowledge of production when writing and recording the song. Despite his only singing experience being from a one year stint in church choir in the third grade, his voice evokes a raw emotion and delivers the passion behind his loose and lyrically focused melodies. Fusing his deep knowledge of music theory with his talent and attention to detail in his writing, Bundt Cakes’ songwriting process is as time consuming and meticulous as can be. He is actively pushing himself to heighten the complexity of the composition as well focusing keenly on his developed lyrical themes, and pulls it off so that a listener would never know he spent 18 months working and developing one riff that is heard in the bridge of a two minute song.

Recently Bundt Cakes has been living in North Carolina for school and playing more music than ever. His main musical inspirations include Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, Radiohead, Snail Mail, and Preston Taylor. He is currently working on a new project for Gray Skills and Bundt Cakes spent the summer months of 2022 writing and recording for his debut record, Selfish, released via Spent Youth. We are ecstatic to hear what’s next from Bundt Cakes.
